To create a good talent build for your shaman there are a few prerequisite that you need to ask yourself before you can begin. Do you want to raid? Do battlegrounds or arena? Do you need a good leveling specc? Regardless of your playstyle you should take into account the class/specc of your fellow guild mates / arena partners to achieve maximum compatibility, beneficial combinations, and avoid redundancies. Players who prefer to go solo obviously don’t need to bother worrying about these issues.

Spells and Abilities with similar effects:

Keeping in mind that there are always many possible variations and modifications depending on one’s playstyle, here are a few talent build examples:

Elemental

The weapon enchant you should use is Flametounge Weapon.

The stats that elemental benefits the most from are: “Spell Power”, “Critical Rating”, and “Hit Rating”. Some prefer to substitute hit rating with “Haste Rating” since shamans naturally have various talents to increase there chance to hit with spells and melee.

PvE Talents

PvP Talents

Enhancement

The enchants you’ll use while dual wielding can vary depending on the situation. I personally use Windfury Weapon on my main hand and Flametounge on my off-hand for PvE since it provides good synergy with Lava Lash and Glyph of Lava Lash. For PvP I use Windfury Weapon on my main hand and Frostbrand Weapon on my off-hand to provide more control and burst using Frozen Power.

The stats we need for this talent tree are: “Attack Power”, “Critical Rating”, “Agility”, and “Haste”. Of course since we’re a hybrid class we also benefit from caster attributes like “Intellect” and “Spell Power” (although that latter we get plenty from talents alone).

PvE Talents

PvP Talents

With the release of patch 3.1.0, the talents we can pick for PvP have varied in a way that we have to sacrifice some talents which previously we took for granted in order to access others such as Improved Fire Nova Totem. To know which talents we should sacrifice we need to be aware of the talents of our arena partner(s) in order to benefit our team to the max. Talents such as Unleashed RageImproved Fire Nova Totem, Weapon Mastery are examples of talents we can swap in and out of our build depending on our needs. Here’s an example of a variant arena specc:

Restoration

The enchant to use with this talent tree is Earthliving Weapon hands down.

The stats that this talent tree requires are the same as any healer (except for Spirit): “Spell Power”, “Intellect”, “Critical Rating” and “Mana / 5 Seconds”. Personally I like to accumulate a healthy amount of “Haste” in my gear since it compliments our healing style which is heavily based on spells with long cast times; with enough haste our spells cast fast enough to make a difference.

PvE Talents

  • Leveling talentsl (Restoration isn’t the most optimal specc to level with so I’d recommend a more hybrid build like this one)

PvP Talents

Hybrid Talents

Hybrid builds are varied and depend on the likes of the player and there are a ton of possibilities for PvE and PvP, although it goes without saying that hybrid builds only exaggerate our crutch of “Jack of All Trades, Master of None”. A few examples are:

This is a pretty solid explanation about which criteria we should use when it comes to picking out our talents. By all means I’ll do my best to keep this information updated from time to time.

As we all should know, shamans are a hybrid class, and as such are a renaissance class capable of doing a little bit of everything. Powerful healers and damage dealers their only difference from the other 2 hybrid classes (druid and paladin) they can’t tank. The most important thing to keep in mind when alocating your talents is to know exactly what we want to do, whether it be healing (Restoration), melee damage (Enhancement), or mastery over the elements (Elemental); although it is also possible to construct a “hybrid” build which allows us to do a little bit of everything but poorly.
